JORGE HERNÁNDEZ // THE FREEBOOTER

From November the 10th until January the 1st 2017
Opening: November the 10th at 7 pm

The Freeboter

“The Freebooter” is the title of the first solo exhibition of Andalusian painter Jorge Hernández in Barcelona. During the XVII century in the Caribbean Sea, the freebooters were pirates who governed themselves, invading other territories, sacking ships and taking the loot no matter what.

In this show, the interpretation has taken control of an artist who investigates constantly about the human condition, turning him into a “thief” of snapshots navigating in the prolific seas of social media.  The appropriation of the imaginary is reflexive, even though the attraction of Hernández for these anonymous characters and their attitudes has a relationship with the nowadays consumption of contemporary photography saturated of chromatic filters and exaggerated exhibition. After the “robbery” and with all the new findings, the artist records, in one frame, intimate stories filled with decontextualizations, blurs, cinematographic shots and metric alterations that become baffling, but at the same time, suggestive and attractive. We deduce fictional scenes, but we have to be careful because the analysis of his representations focuses on the little details that surround the characters, so it can prove that everything is not what it seems at first sight and that we scan a little innocent “virtual” screen. Maybe as Hernández suggests, the future of personal relationships shapes like a canvas covered in glowing resin, full of symbolic games and cognitive alterations. Alongside his professional path, the work of Jorge Hernández has been selected and awarded in numerous national painting contests. His artworks are displayed in national and international art fairs represented by well consolidated art galleries in the artistic area, also taking part of important public and private collections.
