Nuria Valcárcel
Barcelona, 1978
Born in Barcelona in 1978, where she lives and has her studio, Nuria Valcárcel is an oil painter trained at the Barcelona Academy of Art. After a career of almost twenty years in fashion graphic design, she decided to devote herself fully to painting. Her work seeks to convey intimacy and emotion through colour, with influences from nature, Galician folklore and Catalan modernism.
More about the artist
Nuria Valcárcel presents contemporary portraits in which she explores personal and emotional memory, transforming intimate recollections into images that take on a collective meaning. Her paintings, imbued with an enveloping atmosphere, exude universal feelings such as fragility, melancholy and nostalgia, which are manifested through colour, light and the silent construction of each scene. Her work combines the influence of nature, the folklore of her Galician roots and the mark of Catalan modernism, with which she feels a deep affinity. The suggestive gaze of Ramón Casas, the luminous poetics of Santiago Rusiñol and the vibrant chromaticism of Joaquim Mir resonate in her pictorial language, reinterpreted from a contemporary sensibility.
The artist conceives her portraits as small visual stories that dialogue with memory, where the figures represented do not wish to remain anonymous. Valcárcel offers just a glimpse of who they are, a hint that invites the viewer to complete the story. For her, it all begins with writing: an initial phrase germinates into a painting, and the painting, in turn, gives way to new words. This flow between image and text becomes an organic, almost ritualistic process that shapes a shared emotional space.
‘Memories that resonate, concepts never before expressed, words that accompany images and dialogue with them,’ explains the artist. Her texts are a natural extension of her pictorial universe, another way to explore intimacy, identity and the persistent echo of what constitutes us. In this alchemy between writing and painting, Valcárcel constructs a territory where memory becomes visible, and emotion finds a place to remain.
