BARCELONA GALLERY WEEKEND 2022

22.04.2022

Exhibition by Carsten Beck for BGW 2022

The gallery will present the first solo exhibition in Spain of the Danish artist Carsten Beck in this eighth edition of Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2022. In this exhibition, Beck shows his works whose main characteristic is the reduction to a Scandinavian minimalist expression. From a mixture of geometric perspective in shapes and figures and a mathematical attention to detail and high quality materials, Carsten Beck presents canvases of powerful and, at the same time, contradictory geometric combinations.

Barcelona Gallery Weekend is an annual event promoted by the Art Barcelona association and open to all galleries in the city and its metropolitan area. It brings together a general program of exhibitions in art galleries and a parallel program of guided tours by gallery owners, artists and curators, performances, meetings, presentations and other special activities around contemporary and avant-garde art in Barcelona. Barcelona Gallery Weekend eighth edition will take place from 15th to 18th September 2022. Barcelona Gallery Weekend seeks to reinforce and make visible the rich and varied artistic network of Barcelona, encourage art collecting and value the work of galleries, as spaces that generate culture open to the public, and that of their artists.

This year the gallery proposes what will be the first solo exhibition in Spain of the Danish artist Carsten Beck (Denmark, 1986). Carsten Beck's works can be considered a Scandinavian minimalist expression transferred to oil on canvas. His paintings are a mixture of geometric perspective in shapes and forms with a mathematical attention to detail and high quality materials. Beck's background in printmaking and photography allows the artist to see different perspectives in his art, which allows him to create new geometric shapes in a powerful and contradictory colour scheme. Beck's greatest inspiration for creating his artwork also comes from often going for long walks to capture new perspectives and angles. He translates this inspiration into new sketches and ideas. Beck tries to relate his work to mid-century art and at the same time draw inspiration from it. His art does not necessarily need to represent or reflect anything more than the fact that it is a painting, because he believes that sometimes things do not have to make sense or represent something concrete. It is really about composition, as well as the balance between black and white; from the layering of colours to the placement of figures. The symmetrical and asymmetrical aspects must be on point from the beginning. There is a difficulty in making the simple look interesting. Thus, Beck likes to challenge himself.
I am constantly looking back to rework and refine old concepts and ideas, to create new content. The biggest difference is that I have found my path in the concrete artform and started exploring it.
