Max Gärtner

“I consider the hand-drawn line to be of extreme importance, it’s the basis for all my work. To draw by hand represents, to certain extent, presenting one’s most inner self — there is no room for deception, the spectator receives an unadulterated insight.”

From 29 December 2021 to 22 January 2022 you can enjoy our new exhibition at LAB-ART Studio, where we will present some of the new works by artist Max Gärtner.

About the artist:

Max Gärtner (Heidelber, Germany, 1982) guides viewers through rich visual narratives involving captivating characters and symbols. The multidisciplinary artist captures impressions of the otherworldly with the intention of exploring human existence on a metaphysical level. His quest to better understand consciousness and the concept of a multifaceted inner reality translates into depictions of “beings” that embody a sense of monumental power and complexity.

Bali, a destination known for its animist beliefs, became a part-time home for Gärtner after an unexpected trip to the island eight years ago. The Spanish-German artist found in its rich cultural landscape a sense of belonging and community. This bond grew exponentially the more time and creative energy he devoted to discovering his unique spiritual identity. In Bali, works of art are traditionally created as part of a dialogue between worshippers and the gods. This act of storytelling and reverence as an art form is evidently explored in Gärtner’s paper cut-outs and wooden sculptures.

Like their subject matter, Gärtner‘s pieces are visually unique and captivating. The role of each line is paramount in his work. Each stroke occupies an important and immovable space within the form presented. A powerful presence materialises through complex relationships of interrelated contours. The process of creation involves distinct and time-consuming practices. After the works are conceptualised and drawn, they are either hand carved in wood using traditional tools and techniques or transferred to paper and cut, shaped and assembled by hand.
