Where Dreams Dwell
Malgosia Jankowska (Poland, 1978) captures a magical nature in Where Dreams Dwell through watercolour and ink with masterful technique. Jankowska works in pieces with a distinct monochromatic range that, taken together, explore red, blue, or grey landscapes. In this solo exhibition, the artist delves into two central concepts of her work: living nature and still life.
In the first concept, Malgosia Jankowska depicts an enveloping nature that surrounds human beings. It is an abundant environment that absorbs the protagonist, allowing them to lose themselves and find themselves in dreamlike landscapes: the forest, tranquillity, and the path. The artist’s source of inspiration is the Grimm brothers’ tales, full of folklore, which is why the solitary figure, often that of a child, is repeated. For Malgosia Jankowska, childhood symbolises innocence and genuine freedom. In her paintings, children wander through the forest and connect with its mystical aspect, unaware of the danger that surrounds them.
In the second concept, her works become contemporary still lifes, detailed and laden with symbolism. Malgosia Jankowska composes a horror vacui where floral, fantastical, and everyday elements coexist. These still lifes are scenes of desolate banquets, but with the presence of wild animals waiting to be found.
Malgosia Jankowska constructs spaces where her characters can explore and daydream. They and nature connect in settings that evoke fairy tales. Her paintings invite us on a journey through the world of the subconscious, of the intangible and unknown.
