In her series RRSS, Ana Riaño explores how artistic identity changes when filtered through the visual language of social media. To do so, she recovers female creators of floral still lifes. She places them in a contemporary digital environment, questioning how they would present themselves today on platforms such as Instagram. The project examines the narratives, images and self-affirmation strategies these historical artists, who already worked from peripheral positions within the canon, would adopt.
The works arise from a pictorial reinterpretation of their still lifes, interrupted by frames, icons and graphics typical of today’s interfaces. This clash between the contemplation of still life and the brilliant immediacy of the digital environment reveals how the logic of exhibition shifts the work from the studio to the screen. By combining tradition and overexposure, the series reflects on the interrupted legacy of women artists and the contemporary need to construct oneself as an image in the fragmented and highly mutable digital present.
