Throughout the history of art, the landscape has not merely been a representation of nature; it has also served as a realm for artistic exploration, a reflection of the human experience and a space in which to capture memories and emotions, whilst also giving free rein to the artist’s creativity. Far from being an objective view, the landscape is shaped by the perspective of the observer.
‘The Shape of Silence’ brings together works by Clara Adolphs, Gerard Castellví, Léo Dorfner, Malgosia Jankowska, Stefan Peters and Ramon Surinyac, who, through different artistic languages and ways of viewing the landscape, explore new ways of interpreting it.
The exhibition is a journey through landscapes that range from the real to the imagined, from the figurative to the abstract, and from memory to perception. From green forests to snow-capped mountains, these scenes serve as starting points for exploring all the possibilities that painting offers us to express and transform what catches the eye.
In some works, the landscape appears as a memory; in others, as a fragment that has endured over time; in others still, as a territory to be explored; and in yet other cases, as a composition in which the painting itself takes precedence over representation.
Despite their differences, the six contemporary artists share a closeness to the landscape that transcends objectivity; their works invite the viewer to reconsider the relationship between the external world and the inner world of each individual, questioning to what extent what we see reflects reality or our own interpretation.
‘The Shape of Silence’ thus prompts a reflection on the contemporary gaze and on the enduring relevance of a genre which, far from having run its course, continues to offer new possibilities for expression, experimentation and discovery.
